Screenings Aggregate Delivery

Screening aggregate is a commonly used product for various construction projects. Screening also goes by the names of "stone dust," "stone screenings," "grit," and "quarry dust." So you have heard of screening aggregate, but do you know what it is? Screenings are a pulverized byproduct of the stone-crushing process at quarries and rock yards. In the past, screening was considered a waste product. Not any longer! Screenings are the smaller crushed stone pieces and fines that pass through the screens meant to catch and collect larger pieces that will make up other products, like rip rap and gravel.

In general, the size of screenings are generally 3/8" down to dust and are made up of whatever type of rock it is that is being crushed. The most common types of crushed rock for screenings include granite and limestone. Its durability and sand-like particle sizes make it an effective leveling agent for project, as well as a nice finishing layer on hardscapes and other masonry projects.

Common Applications for Screenings

Here are some of the common applications for the use of screenings.

Pavers

Screenings are most commonly used as a setting bed and joint filler for pavers. Due to their compaction properties, they help to form a sturdy, non-porous upper layer that protects from moisture seeping into the base layer. The interlocked screenings will also prevent weed and grass growth from sprouting up between pavers, ensuring a cleaner look throughout its lifespan.

While screenings are undoubtedly effective for these reasons between pavers and as a smooth finishing layer, some cautions need to be raised as well. These cautions come about due to the fact that these screenings can be too non-porous and can trap water rather than allow for proper drainage. Concrete and sand offer this capability, which limits flooding. Water retention under the pavers can pose some big issues, like causing the pavers to shift and crack, especially for paver patios during the freeze-thaw cycle that happens in cold climates like the northeast.

Screenings are also great to combine with other elements, such as concrete sand that make for a great bedding layer for pavers. Many contractors and landscapers use screening aggregate as their go-to material for projects.

Horse Arenas

Limestone screening aggregate is a popular choice to use as a surface layer for horse arenas, riding areas, stalls, and for the flooring in a barn. The limestone screening aggregate is a relatively cheap and effective option for these horse and animal footing applications, as they compact well and are stable for safety purposes. However, without the proper moisture and upkeep, the stone layer can compact too well and become harmful to the horse's hooves due to the newfound hardness of the aggregate. To slow down this possibility, you can mix ground/recycled rubber or sand into the aggregate and that can prevent over-compaction.

Other Common Areas You Find Screening Aggregate

Aside from pavers and hardscaping and the use in horse arenas, screenings have plenty more uses and applications, including:

  • Use as a smooth finishing layer for walkways and patios.
  • Great for use on biking and hiking trails.
  • Use effectively for garden paths.
  • Great binding agent for cement or asphalt driveways, roads and sidewalks.
  • Fill material, especially for concreted areas.
  • Mineral and fertility enhancer for compost and soils.
